Yes My Child Can Tutors
School Turnaround AmeriCorps Commission State Competitive FY 2013
A. Executive Summary
In partnership with the Achievement School District's Superintendent, Chris Barbic, Yes My Child Can, Tutors Inc. proposes the Special Mentoring and Academic Readiness Tutoring (SMART) project in which forty AmeriCorps members will provide increased tutoring and mentoring support to 40 students from each school who are frequently absent from school or have a history of disciplinary problems in all five of the lowest achieving schools in Memphis, Tennessee. From August 1, 2013 to July of 2016, we anticipate that we will have sustained 200 mentor matches, the number of students having disciplinary referrals will decrease by 100 and 100 students will have demonstrated increased attendance in each year of the project. SMART will focus on the CNCS focus area of sustaining disadvantaged youth being matched with mentors (ED4A), improving school attendance (ED6) and no or decreased disciplinary referrals (ED7). The CNCS investment of $263,781 will be matched with secured in-kind and cash contributions in the amount of $89,155 for Year 1 and is a good investment as it will provide the schools with the additional community supports that they need to address their turnaround efforts and achieve the goals set in their school reform plans.
