Big Valley Band of Pomo Indians
The Big Valley Rancheria AmeriCorps Program is designed to improve the academic achievement of Big Valley Rancheria Tribal youth by using Big Valley Rancheria Tribal member tutors to work with students in the areas of reading, writing, and math to improve academic participation and increase literacy skills. Big Valley Rancheria is a rural, small, agricultural community located in Lakeport, California, that has a staggering unemployment rate, high-school dropout rate, and wide-spread poverty. The Big Valley Rancheria AmeriCorps program is direct attempt to both decrease the unemployment rate, increase academic participation, and in turn, improve the educational achievement, employability, and life skills of Big Valley Rancheria Tribal members. The Big Valley Rancheria AmeriCorps program deliberately uses Big Valley Rancheria Tribal members to tutor, mentor, and influence younger Big Valley Rancheria Tribal members. Because of the wide-spread inter-generational poverty that exists on the Rancheria, Big Valley Rancheria Tribal members most readily respond to the other Tribal members and value the opinions of other Tribal members. The Big Valley AmeriCorps Program utilizes the Big Valley Rancheria's greatest resource, the people, to influence positive community change.
