The planning grant will primarily focus on a AmeriCorps education and tutoring program to engage AmeriCorps Native American members in assisting Native American youth and young adults with poor academic performance complete high school and improve their academic performance and education capacity. A Grants Planning Specialist will be hired for one year to facilitate research and conduct community outreach with local high schools agencies, and community services to assess AmeriCorps needs and determine what AmeriCorps activity should do, and where AmeriCorps workers will be placed. The outcomes include an AmeriCorps Implementation Plan with AmeriCorps best practices and knowledge, whereby Native American youth will gain an adequate education to secure good jobs in their homeland and make a difference in their communities. An AmeriCorps Program will reduce poverty and Native American dependence on government assistance, and it will also strengthen the local capacity for economic sustainability.
