National Council for Community and Education Partnerships
This planning grant will be utilized to develop an AmeriCorps program which will engage AmeriCorps members (members) to support federal GEAR UP programs by providing year-long academic and social supports to GEAR UP students most at risk for dropping out of middle or high school. NCCEP will initially partner with GEAR UP programs in at least three states that may include Texas, California, Kentucky and Illinois, among others. Members will specifically address the challenges of keeping economically disadvantaged students in grades 7-12 engaged in school, and work to overcome the risk factors that lead to students dropping out before they graduate from high school. Member activities will result in changes in student academic expectations for themselves, a lowered drop-out rate for the school, and, over the long term, an increase in the high school graduation rate.
