Northwest Youth Corps - OR
AmeriCorps National Direct FY 2012
Northwest Youth Corps (NYC) requests 79 AmeriCorps members (56 MSY) to help restore communities, by educating at-risk students to increase their academic success; giving young people the knowledge they need to live healthier lives; and leveraging additional volunteers to carry out trail construction or repair and noxious weed removal in 18 communities in Oregon, Washington and Idaho. By the end of this three-year project (ending August 2016), 750 at-risk students will complete participation in a CNCS-supported K-12 education program (ED2) and increase their engagement through service-learning (ED27); 1,500 unduplicated youth will receive the knowledge and skills needed to reduce childhood obesity (H6); and 8,828 volunteers will contribute 286,524 hours of conservation work to clean or improve 1,589 acres of public lands (EN4) and/or create or maintain 331 miles of public trails (EN5). This project meets the CNCS focus areas of Education, Healthy Futures, and Environmental Stewardship. The CNCS investment of $744,799 will be matched with $551,306 in cash and in-kind from NYC and our partners.
