Points of Light Foundation
As the world's leading volunteer organization, Points of Light has made a strategic, organizational commitment to engaging volunteers (veterans and civilians) in service to support returning military men and women as they seek to reintegrate into civilian life. By leveraging the human capital, leadership skills and passion of AmeriCorps members (including veterans), we will deploy service as a strategy to address two key elements of the reintegration challenge that are critically linked: community engagement and job readiness. With 90 AmeriCorps members placed in teams of 3 to 10 in up to 20 communities, in year one, we will provide job readiness support to 10,000 veterans and engage more than 20,000 veterans as volunteers or volunteer leaders who will engage other veterans and members of their communities. We aim to recruit veterans as 50% of our HandsOn Corps. Over three years, we expect to see an increase in job placements following job fairs, from 18 to 30% in markets targeted through our partnership with the U.S. Chamber's Hiring Our Heroes initiative. With each AmeriCorps member leveraging 2,400 volunteers (civilian and veteran) a year, the program also creates sustainable engagement of veterans and volunteers that will create stronger communities and a stronger nation. The CNCS investment of $1.19M will be matched with $1.18M that leverages both local dollars and national private sector funds.
