Goodwill Industries of Northern New England
AmeriCorps National Direct FY 2012
Goodwill Industries of Northern New England proposes to expand our highly successful AmeriCorps initiatives with the addition of a new program called The Stateside Service Corps. This program is designed to improve the lives of Veterans and military families in communities throughout Northern New England by helping them navigate an increasingly complex network of social services. Using proven intervention techniques, we will recruit, enroll and train thirty full time stipended AmeriCorps members and thirty-two part time Education Award Only members. These individuals will work in organizations dedicated to meeting Veterans' critical needs. Goodwill will assess AmeriCorps members' knowledge, skills and abilities and coordinate placement with appropriate nonprofit organizations. Together, they will work on a variety of issues facing returning Veterans and military families such as the climbing rate of suicide, homelessness, the unacceptably high rate of Veteran unemployment, retention of Veterans in post-secondary education, and access to desperately needed medical and mental health services. Through the direct efforts of the AmeriCorps members, more than 100 additional community volunteers will be engaged. Goodwill's proposal seeks $490,250 in CNCS funds that will be leveraged with $198,000 in local cash match and $256,000 in local in kind match.
