Faith Hope and Love Jesus, Inc.
This planning grant will be utilized to develop an AmeriCorps program which will engage the service of veterans and their family members to become AmeriCorps members as they provide health education and screening for the purposes of educating and registering bone marrow donors. Further, AmeriCorps members will help young patients maintain a sense of security while coping with and minimizing the fears, anxieties and stress in the medical setting by offering therapeutic activities tailored to meet their social and emotional needs through familiar experiences such as play, art and socializing with peers. Additionally, in addressing the needs of families and children in treatment for cancer and blood disorders AmeriCorps members enhance the young patient's emotional and social growth in the context of his/her family, culture, and stage of development. Minimize the necessity for pain management during treatment and hospitalization. Support parents and encourage their participation in their child's healthcare. Help children and families continue everyday living experiences as much as possible. The designated service areas for the AmeriCorps program will be in Atlanta, GA, Dallas and Fort Worth, TX, Hartford, CT, Memphis, TN, Miami, FL and New York, NY. Program activities will primarily be in the focus area of service of veterans and their family members.
