Music National Service Initiative
AmeriCorps National Direct FY 2012
28 full-time AmeriCorps Members will infuse music instruction and service learning into under-resourced schools and afterschool programs in communities with high dropout rates in Austin, TX; Denver, CO; Los Angeles, CA; and the Bay Area, CA. Building on clear research and best practices from tested models, MusicianCorps Members will work with more than 6,700 students in elementary and secondary education to increase their academic engagement. In a privately funded pilot project, 7 out of 10 high school students indicated an increased desire to attend school as a result of working with full-time musician volunteers. With an investment of $372,400 from CNCS, this pilot can be taken to scale, leveraging an additional $1,082,070 match and the volunteer efforts of more than 15,000 youth and adults to build on the unique synergies created when music and service are combined. The resulting return on that investment is improved academic engagement of students from under-resourced schools and an increase in their commitment to serve their own communities, outcomes we cannot afford to pass up in the nation's current educational crisis.
