Iowa Public Health Association Foundation
The Iowa Public Health Association (IPHA) AmeriCorps HealthCorps program will reduce the risk of chronic disease and obesity through nutrition and physical activity programs and focus on the issue area of health/nutrition for Iowa children and families. Ten full-time members will work to reduce the level of obesity among Iowans. Over one-third of all Iowa children and almost two-thirds of Iowa adults are overweight or obese. Resulting chronic diseases from obesity are already at epidemic proportions. Members and up to 150 volunteers will initiate or expand upon public health and wellness programs in up to 10 different regions. Members will reach over 3,000 Iowans to reduce the risk of chronic disease and obesity through education, outreach, and creating and implementing nutrition and physical activity programs at the grassroots levels. Building upon the initial grant started September 1, 2011, members will partner with other local or statewide programs to leverage resources, expand impact and sustain results. The CNCS investment of $130,000 will be matched with $88,000.
