Commission AmeriCorps State Fixed Amount Grants FY 2012
In the thirteenth year of the Parasol Tahoe Community Foundation AmeriCorps Program, seventeen full-time AmeriCorps member will serve at eleven community agencies starting on September 1st, 2012 and finishing on August 31st, 2013. The target community of this program includes parents, children age birth to 18 years, seniors ages 55 and older, residents living at the poverty line or in need of social services, and all residents and visitors who have an impact on our natural environment and the protection of Lake Tahoe. Through this AmeriCorps program, there will be safe and constructive places for children to complete homework, safe house mentoring/counseling services, violence prevention education, healthy nutrition education, food distribution, environmental education and conversation, early childhood education, disaster preparedness, senior service programs, and empowerment programs for teens, as well as volunteer opportunities that will engage all ages and backgrounds to foster greater participation in the community. This project will focus on the CNCS focus areas of Environment, Education, Healthy Futures, and Disaster Preparedness. At the end of the three-year grant cycle, our goal is to build a stronger community. Our aim is to increase literacy, math, and science skills in school children, providing mentoring, volunteer, and career experiences for teens, provide transportation and other social services to seniors, provide food to those in emergency situations, educate our residents on disaster preparedness, present nutrition education to youth, and environmental awareness and education to protect the fragile natural environment that is the lifeline of our community. Lastly, our program seeks to form a highly trained, collaborative team of AmeriCorps members who are skilled in volunteer recruitment and management, to impart a lasting increase in the capacity of our essential agencies. We are requesting $221,000 for 17 full-time 1700 hour members in a fixed amount grant, at a rate of $13,000 per member.
