Five AmeriCorps members will become Student Coordinators in the S.T.A.R.S. program (Students Tackling AIMS and Reaching Success) at West Phoenix High School in Phoenix, Arizona. At the end of the program year, September 1, 2012 through August 31, 2013, the AmeriCorps members partnered with the school staff will have created and enhanced a college-bound culture at the school that supports high expectations and levels of achievement for all students. The program will focus on the preparation for success in post secondary education institution for economically disadvantaged youth using education and behavior outcomes as measures. The school will track the impact of the program using the CNCS Tier 1 National Performance Measures:
o ED4A the number of disadvantaged youth/mentor matches that were sustained through the year.
* West Phoenix High School Student Coordinators will sustain 100% of the student relationships over the course of the project year as defined by the youth/mentor participation summary log.
o ED5 number of students with improved academic performance in literacy and math.
* West Phoenix High School will raise the percent passing for sophomores and juniors in AIMS math and AIMS reading by 10% in each area in the project year as defined by AMIS results.
o ED6 number of youth who have improved their school attendance over the course of the AmeriCorps program's involvement with the student.
* The cohort will improve its cumulative attendance by 5% over the course of the project year as defined by student tracking logs.
The federal investment of $65,000 is being requested. No matching funds are required for the AmeriCorps State Fixed Amount Grant Program. However, funds will be contributed to the proposed program out of the schools entitlement grants and the general budget to ensure the school implements the program with fidelity.
