Relay Graduate School of Education
AmeriCorps National Fixed Amount Grants FY 2012
Relay Graduate School of Education ["RGSE"], recently licensed by New York State and formerly known as Teacher U, is an independent graduate school with a ground-breaking Master's degree program designed specifically to respond to today's urgent demand for effective teachers in low-income communities. Currently, RGSE operates campuses in New York, NY and Newark, NJ. We seek AmeriCorps funding to develop and implement the Relay Teaching Residency program. If funded 50 AmeriCorps members will teach Math, Science, Social Studies, or English Language Arts, tutor small groups of students, and volunteer in various capacities within schools in New York, NY and Newark, NJ. At the end of the three-year grant period, AmeriCorps members will have led many hundreds of high-needs students to significant levels of achievement, will have provided an invaluable source of human capital to schools in low-income communities, and will have received the requisite credentials to continue teaching. This project will focus on the CNCS focus area of Education. The CNCS investment of $100,000 will be supplemented by sustainable funds from RGSE's assets.
