Mount St. Helens Institute
The Mt. Adams Institute (MAI) will partner with schools, community organizations and agencies to engage 25 fulltime AmeriCorps members to meet the diverse needs of underserved urban and rural youth in the states of Washington and Oregon. MAI's AmeriCorps members will address the Corporation for National and Community Service's focus areas of education, healthy futures and environmental stewardship and will work to increase the academic achievement levels of youth, improve their physical and mental wellbeing and raise their level of awareness of environmentally-conscious practices. Over the three year project period from January 2013 to November 2015, the 25 AmeriCorps members will engage more than 12,750 youth in outdoor based educational, physical fitness and environmental activities. Members will engage more than 3,750 community volunteers to increase the impact of their activities. As a result, 80% of the participants will demonstrate an improvement in their academic engagement, enhanced levels of physical and mental wellbeing and increased awareness of environmentally conscious practices. The annual CNCS funding of $325,000 for this project will be matched by $362,500 from MAI and its partners.
