The state service commissions of Florida and Georgia propose a joint National Day of Service and Remembrance grant to provide training in disaster services and capacity building activities organized around the theme of Florida & Georgia Remember 9/11: Rebuild, Renew and Honor through Service. Together, we will focus on the power of service to address vital needs in communities while honoring lives lost and those who served on 9/11 by tapping into the hearts and minds of volunteers to transform communities. The Collaborative will convene 15 Regional Roundtable Teams (8-Georgia/7-Florida, based on Emergency Management regions), to train stakeholders in each region. Roundtable teams will increase community resiliency by mobilizing volunteers to address unique needs in communities. Participants will be prepared to respond to disasters while honoring the memory of lives lost and those who rose in service on 9/11. This Collaborative will engage 12,000 volunteers in 2012 by jointly promoting training and disaster service activities, maximizing public awareness and outcomes, leveraging resources and building on past successes. Special emphasis will be placed on engaging and empowering veterans and military families to positively impact their quality of life while strengthening existing partnerships and creating new opportunities with groups who support veterans and families.
