Executive Summary

Title: PREPARING THE WHOLE COMMUNITY FOR DISASTER BY ESTABLISHING A CULTURE OF PREPAREDNESS

Applicant: Community Organizations Active in Disaster, Inc. d/b/a BRACE

Summary Information: Build community capacity to prepare for, respond to, recover from and mitigate disasters and increase community resiliency in 8 regional counties. Expand disaster preparedness education efforts from one county to eight, reaching a minimum of 90,000 residents of Northwest Florida at high risk to hurricane impacts, with disaster preparedness education programs and information by September 15, 2012.

The Project will directly support eight counties in Northwest Florida: Bay, Escambia, Franklin, Gulf, Okaloosa, Wakulla and Walton. A Youth Emergency Preparedness Expo (YEP!) will serve as the September 11th National Day of Service and Remembrance focus of efforts to engage faith-based organizations, schools and business & industry in efforts to enhance the disaster preparedness of youth, while engaging them in service learning efforts that will benefit the most vulnerable residents of the community.

The Project will directly engage 900 volunteers in 2012 and grow to engage at least 2,000 volunteers in 2013. The disaster preparedness needs of the homebound, hungry and persons with disabilities and functional needs will be addressed through this Project.
