FY 2012 National Day of Service and Remembrance Grants
Up2Us, a national coalition of more than 500 sports-based youth development organizations, proposes to increase the capacity of its AmeriCorps programs to support and expand the participation of volunteers in the September 11 Day of Service and Remembrance. The proposed project, the Mobilize Volunteer and Commemorate Project (MVC), will provide training, technical assistance, online resources, and sub-grants (in year two). Up2Us will engage member organizations with AmeriCorps resources in the implementation of this project. The Up2Us network includes AmeriCorps programs in 27 states, the majority of which are working in urban areas with low graduation rates. The activities proposed by Up2Us will increase the ability of these organizations to engage volunteers and generate educational outcomes and will have impact on a national scale. Through MVC, Up2Us will develop volunteer and volunteer manager curricula, recruit and train volunteers to work as coach-mentors in sports-based youth development programs, provide online technical assistance in implementing the volunteer manager and volunteer curricula, and mobilize member organizations to conduct service events connected to the 9/11 Day of Service. In year two of the project, Up2Us will launch a sub-grant program to provide financial support to organizations and programs conducting service projects to commemorate the 9/11 Day of Service. MVC activities will result in a sustainable increase in the capacity of Up2Us programs to recruit, train, manage, mobilize, and retain volunteers and lead to a higher level of service engagement and participation around 9/11. These programs will also increase their ability to generate educational outcomes for program participants. MVC will be implemented and managed by the Up2Us National Director for Volunteerism and Events, with additional staff support and oversight on the national, regional, and local levels. Up2Us will leverage its past and current experience in implementing AmeriCorps and other projects supported by the Corporation for National and Community Service to ensure the success and effectiveness of the proposed project.
