Commission AmeriCorps State FY 2012
Thirty AmeriCorps members will implement a tutoring/mentoring program for 3rd-8th grade providing tutoring to each of 240 students per week. The program will be designed to foster good study habits (improve homework completion), and encourage positive behaviors (reduction in disciplinary referrals). Twenty-three AmeriCorps members will likewise implement a tutoring/mentoring program for K-2nd grade providing literacy training to each of 184 students per week to improve their reading to bring them up to grade level. Also twelve AmeriCorps members will help with the Regional Volunteerism Conference and ACCESS SI to establish virtual family resource centers in the extreme southern counties of Illinois. Eight of those members serving in environmental education to help children, and their families learn more about environmental stewardship will concentrate their efforts to improve State and National Parks, City Parks, Trails and recycling projects. The other four members serving with non-profit and faith-based organizations will serve in battered women's shelters, homeless shelters, and computer literacy labs. The two major Focus Areas will be the Education Focus, and Environmental Stewardship Focus. The CNCS investment is $499,536 and the projected match is $499,524. These 65 AmeriCorps members will leverage an additional 325 volunteers.
