South Carolina Military Department
This planning grant will be used by the South Carolina Military Department (SCMD) to develop the mission, goals, intermediate objectives, and operational personnel structure and budget for an AmeriCorps single-state program addressing unmet needs of National Guard service members and their family members, and honorably discharged National Guard veterans and their family members, residing in South Carolina (the "beneficiaries"). The program to be developed will have two parallel, closely connected goals. The first goal will be to engage selected beneficiaries as members of AmeriCorps' State and National program. The second will be to use these members to effectively address unmet needs of other beneficiaries, especially employment needs, housing needs, medical needs, educational needs, and family support needs. The planning grant ultimately will result in enhanced state and community service by those beneficiaries serving as AmeriCorps members, and in numerous other Veterans Corps beneficiaries becoming more productive and self-sufficient than before. Program activities will be focused within South Carolina.
