Pocahontas County Free Libraries
AmeriCorps National Planning Grant FY 2011
This project will plan a rebirth of the New Deal WPA Federal Project One - a program that combated poverty by providing socially useful work to unemployed writers, artists, actors and photographers and generated the celebrated "Guide to America" series-- in communities along US 219 from its southern terminus in Peterstown WV to its northern terminus in Buffalo NY. For an example of one of the 50 state guides published around 1940, go to: http://books.google.com/booksid=Q3n11Tg9kDoC&printsec=frontcover&dq=west...
As envisioned, this project will employ a variety of talented people, both young and old, full time and part-time, in documenting the life of the communities along this poverty-stricken corridor and generating a variety of work products -- print, artistic, multi-media -- which will be incorporated in a plan to generate economic development and alleviate poverty through the development of historical and cultural tourism.
