Ohio-West Virginia YMCA
Commission AmeriCorps State Fixed Amount Grants FY 2011
YMCA Camp Horseshoe, as a part of the larger Ohio-West Virginia YMCA, seeks to extend life-changing programs to develop citizenship, build community, and create better futures for all. AmeriCorps members will mentor high school and middle school leaders through Horseshoe's unique training model. As they work with these youth, members will become mentors and recruit youth as volunteers for some of West Virginia's neediest children. During the second phase of the program, Horseshoe will partner with the WV Department of Education, community service agencies across the state, and with parents to provide a 4 one-week experiences for hundreds of low income, deserving children. High school students who successfully complete the earlier leadership summit training are invited to return for this second phase and apply their training in this real-world example of community building. Interviews and reflection activities will highlight the changed lives created by these programs.
