ASPIRE to Teach: University of Delaware AmeriCorps National Direct Grant Request
The purpose of the ASPIRE to Teach program is to develop an outreach effort that will mobilize recent college graduates and University of Delaware students to serve as change agents. The work will engage 11 Full-time AmeriCorps members to focus on creating peer mediated academic support and college planning services in selected high schools in Delaware and New York. The core services to high school students include leadership development and academic coaching. The strategic output of this work will be development of an Academic Leadership Corps of 45 high school students who will serve as peer academic coaches in schools with high concentrations of students who face challenges in succeeding in high school and preparing for postsecondary opportunities. The Full-time AmeriCorps members and high school leaders will work with 300 students in three partner high schools. The high school leaders will be trained and mentored by University of Delaware undergraduate teacher education students who are actively engaged in developing and delivering college awareness and readiness workshops. The project will support two graduate students as AmeriCorps members to support evaluation, including the conduct of specific quasi-experimental research that will better position the effort for replication into additional communities. The overall intent of the work is to nurture an interest in teaching and support high school students in accessing college enrollment.
