Greater New Orleans Foundation
Nonprofit Capacity Building Program 2011
The Greater New Orleans Foundation is a community foundation headquartered in New Orleans, LA and serving the surrounding 12 parishes in the southeast region of the state. The Growing Better Nonprofits in New Orleans program is committed to developing high quality programs, objectives, and performance measures for our nonprofits which are critical to fundraising, governance, program development, and successful evaluation. Our goals are to:
1) Better equip our grantees to develop and implement performance measurement systems
2) Enable grantees to develop and implement their programs and services to better meet community needs
3) Increase the capacity of target nonprofits in key areas of nonprofit management, leadership and governance
4) Enhance the ability of grantees to network and learn with and from one another
Our approach will be a mixture of networked learning and individual assistance. We will identify and convene four cohorts--two cohorts of 5 grantees per year--using a community of practice model in which nonprofits will share practices and develop new skills and competencies through a collective learning process. This "learning community" approach is an effective and efficient way for grantees to learn about performance management. It also allows for both joint training and subsequent individual sessions with external consultants and re-convenes the cohort at regular intervals to share their learnings, successes, and challenges. Through discussions, mini-lectures, case studies, and application of tools, our grantees understanding of the relationship between project activities and intended program outcomes will increase through the development and use of logic models.
We will serve 20 small and mid-sized nonprofits (health, environmental stewardship, and economic opportunity) in a 10-parish area which was impacted by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita in 2005 and more recently by the 2010 BP oil spill catastrophe. We request $200,000.
