Literacy New York
Nonprofit Capacity Building Program 2011
TITLE : Literacy New York - Lancaster, NY 14086
Building Literate Communities-Capacity Building Accreditation
The economic recession has impacted all human service organizations, none more than grassroots organizations. Literacy New York (LNY) is an administrative/technical assistance office that provides training and support to 36 independent, 501c3 volunteer literacy organizations in 54 NYS counties. These organizations provide high quality, no cost basic literacy and English language instruction to functionally illiterate adults.
The LNY network faces significant resource challenges and is in critical need of a comprehensive performance management system. LNY will utilize proven procedures to create a continuous improvement/Accreditation model. As affiliates improve processes, both the affiliate and the network will build capacity as lessons learned and best practices are shared.
OBJECTIVES - (1) Strengthen the capacity of the intermediary through resource development to provide training and technical assistance to meet identified literacy affiliate needs. (2) Develop a program management system: LNY Capacity Assessment Tool (CAT) to strengthen affiliates' governance and instructional capacity; goal: to serve more students, better.
KEY METHODOLOGIES/STRATEGIES: Conduct Pre/Post Impact Assessments; create/implement Management, Governance and Instructional Accreditation Process to enable literacy affiliates to enhance services to economically disadvantaged adults and communities; implement a statewide interactive, participatory, collaborative and connected network to support and build the capacity of LNY affiliates.
GEOGRAPHIC AREA TO BE SERVED: Project will target affiliates in LNY's 54 county service area. Year 1, project will serve 20 economically challenged communities. Year 2 will target the 16 additional LNY affiliates and additional nonprofit educational providers.
