Gateway Charter School
Commission AmeriCorps State FY 2011
In July 2010 the Delaware Department of Education approved a $725,000 planning grant, disseminated over three years, to form the Gateway Lab School (GLS), a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization located in Newark, DE. GLS will serve students throughout New Castle County beginning the 2011/12 School Year. Modeled after the acclaimed Lab School of Washington?, Gateway students will benefit from a unique special education approach with curriculum specifically designed for students with learning disabilities and ADHD. The program has been extremely successful, with over 90% of Lab School of Washington? students graduating and going onto college. The Gateway Lab School will serve students ages 8-13 in grades 3 through 7 in year one, adding 8th grade in year two, 2nd grade year three and 1st grade in year four. There will be three classes per grade with 12 students per class. The school will be centrally located in Newark, DE, serving students throughout New Castle County. The assistance of seven full-time AmeriCorps members and three part-time members will enable Gateway to attain capacity building goals by implementing, continuing, and/or expanding projects. Members will accelerate the establishment and implementation of Gateway's after-school tutoring and summer programming. Through our partnership with AmeriCorps members, GLS can dramatically increase our volunteer management capacity, address special education design in the context of the collective needs of the community, and to constantly improve our efforts to better serve our students. Members also will strengthen our initiatives to design and execute new community partnerships that help us impact the lives of special education students and their families more completely. The equation is quite simple: by combining the strengths of AmeriCorp members with our existing pool of highly talented educators, the more effective Gateway becomes.
