Leadership, Education and Athletics in Partnership
Commission AmeriCorps State FY 2011
LEAP's mission is to develop the strengths and talents of young people who help create and implement year-round, community-based programming designed to achieve positive academic and social outcomes for children living in high-poverty urban neighborhoods. LEAP's proposed AmeriCorps program rests at the core of LEAP's structure, offering college graduates and college students meaningful experiences in a classroom setting with children and the opportunity to earn educational awards to support their own academic pursuits. LEAP's continuum of youth development programming and multi-tiered mentoring model will improve academic engagement and leadership skills, reinforce the importance of education, and instill an ethic of service in both members and children. LEAP and AmeriCorps shared values of citizenship, member development, and service to community result in a mutually beneficial relationship that has had a positive impact on thousands of Connecticut youth over the past eighteen years.
