United Way of Santa Fe County
Commission AmeriCorps State FY 2011
United Way of Santa Fe County (UWSFC) proposes to place six full-time AmeriCorps Members to support an Afterschool Literacy Program at the Aspen Community Magnet School in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
The Afterschool Literacy Program helps elementary school students increase their reading skills. The target impact is to increase the percentage of students in the program who measure as 'proficient or above' on the New Mexico Standards Based Assessment.
Afterschool Literacy is one part of the Santa Fe Children's Project - a complex community impact program implemented by UWSFC to address the problem of chronic poverty in Santa Fe.
The AmeriCorps members will work in the Afterschool Literacy Program with children one-on-one and in small groups to improve their reading skills. All activities will be engaging and hands-on. During the daytime school hours two of the members will work recruiting and coordinating volunteers and the other four members will work as classroom tutors in Language Arts.
