Public Policy Center of Mississippi
Commission AmeriCorps State FY 2011
Mississippi is at or near the bottom in many indicators of school readiness for preschool children. In order to help solve this problem, the Public Policy Center of Mississippi (PPC) proposes to continue the Capital Area Early Literacy Corps as an AmeriCorps program. The PPC will recruit eight full-time members and twenty-four part time members to serve in the program for the 2011-2012 program year. The members will receive orientation to AmeriCorps and training in early literacy education. They will be sent into nonprofit childcare centers in Hinds, Rankin, and Madison counties that serve at-risk children. The members will work with small groups of children in centers using literacy activities that enhance their vocabulary and other targeted early literacy skills linked to later reading success. They will also read extensively to children when not engaged in specific activities. In addition, members will recruit community volunteers to assist in community-based service projects on national days of service as well as additional days determined by the members.
