The YDI AmeriCorps program will provide literacy tutoring to youth to increase literacy levels leading to improved academic performance, improved attendance and higher graduation rates. The program will recruit young adults from the community as AmeriCorps members who have a commitment to improving the education of our youth and who have a desire to make a difference for themselves and their community through meaningful service opportunities and educational experiences.
According to the NM Public Education Department, Albuquerque Public Schools (APS) are not meeting proficiency levels in Reading. It's reported that, 41.6% of children in grades 3rd through 4th, 44.6% in grades 6th through 8th, and 41.6% of high school youth are reading below grade level. Many APS schools are identified as "Schools in Need of Improvement I, II, Corrective Action, Restructuring I or II." With an enrollment of 90,162 students, APS is the nation's 31st largest school district with a graduation rate of 46.2%.
