United Way of the Bluegrass
Commission AmeriCorps State FY 2011
United Way of the Bluegrass' (UWBG) ActiveCorps program places members, many of whom are veterans, in out-of-school and in-school programs throughout Central Kentucky where they engage with children and youth in physical activities with the purpose of reducing childhood obesity. Through a partnership with the University of Kentucky P20 Innovation Lab focused on health and wellness, members will receive training and ongoing support towards implementing research-based, innovative strategies in engaging children in physical activity. The members will also share the learning and training with the site staff and volunteers so that the whole program can benefit. In exchange, the member's service in the sites becomes community-based, real life learning opportunities that can inform the continuing development of innovative strategies to help increase the overall impact of the collective efforts to address obesity.
