Center for Youth and Family Investment
Commission AmeriCorps State FY 2011
The Center for Youth and Family Investment (CYFI) is a Washington, DC 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization established to enable and support DC traditional public and public charter schools in offering a variety of high-quality programs that support academic instruction and enrich the development of the whole child outside the regular school day. CYFI currently operates four (4) licensed after-care programs; is a state-approved provider of Supplemental Educational Services (SES); and manages several Federal grants for other nonprofits and Local Education Agencies (LEA's). CYFI entered into a management agreement with Heads Up, Inc. effective October 1, 2010. The agreement is for CYFI to manage their $500,000 21st Century Community Learning Center grant awarded by the Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE). This agreement was prompted by Heads Up intent to dissolve and cease operations by December 31, and having the desire to continue its programming for their current students throughout the remaining 3 years of the grant period. To make this work, CYFI hired all grant-related Heads Up staff and now Heads Up is one of four programs of CYFI. Now a program of CYFI, Heads Up plans to provide children from low-income neighborhoods with academic skills and opportunities needed to succeed, at the same time provide college students with the opportunity to understand and help meet those needs in order to promote their development as leaders. CYFI will recruit 160 DC college students to serve as minimum time members that will provide individual and small-group tutoring and homework help in an after-school academic enrichment program designed for Pre-Kindergarten through 12th graders at 4 DC public schools and 6 Friendship Public Charter Schools.
