National Performance Network
The 2009 Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act opened the way for a "musician and artist corps" within the national service movement. Artist Corps New Orleans provides an exciting model for artist-driven service, embedding accomplished musicians as full-time teachers in public elementary schools to build capacity for music education.
Through this application, 5 AmeriCorps Members will serve as Artist Corps New Orleans Fellows, bringing the benefits of music education to New Orleans' at-risk children, and will be provided support and professional development to grow and expand their talents as highly effective educators.
Music education has demonstrated benefits for cognitive and behavioral development and improving overall student achievement. In a city with a remarkable history in musical traditions, Artist Corps New Orleans addresses a community need for music education, nurturing creativity and promoting civic engagement while sustaining the musical legacy of New Orleans.
