Habitat for Humanity of New York State, Inc.
Commission AmeriCorps State FY 2011
Habitat for Humanity's mission is to provide very low income families with safe, decent, affordable homes. Although local Habitat for Humanity affiliates in New York State build 110 homes per year, there is a large unmet housing need across the state. Habitat for Humanity New York State is the state support organization serving 53 local Habitat for Humanity affiliates in New York. The core of our mission is to develop resources and provide technical assistance to support local affiliates in their efforts to build more homes and meet more families' needs. In the past year we have provided 1.2 million dollars in resources to affiliates via state and federal grants. One of Habitat's biggest challenges is finding resources that support the growth of local affiliates so that they can serve more families. There is a need for an AmeriCorps program to complement our existing AmeriCorps VISTA program. An AmeriCorps program will support growth in participating affiliates by sustaining programs initiated by VISTAs or other volunteers, and in particular by supporting Habitat's most valuable resource, it's volunteers.
