5/14/2009 250 AmeriCorps Members to Help Restore Flint Neighborhood
  On Friday, May 15 and Saturday, May 16 more than 250 Michigan's AmeriCorps members from across the state will focus on restoring Flint's Grand Traverse neighborhood. As part of the 2009 Russ Mawby Signature Service Project, AmeriCorps members will assist with building and landscaping projects and help construct a new play structure for area children in Memorial Park.
   
5/14/2009 Gov. Perdue Announces AmeriCorps Programs to Celebrate National AmeriCorps Week
  Gov. Bev Perdue today announced that North Carolina AmeriCorps members will participate in a variety of service projects and activities to celebrate National AmeriCorps Week, May 9-16. The governor also signed an AmeriCorps Week proclamation to thank program members and dedicate this week in their honor.
   
5/14/2009 Celebrating AmeriCorps Week 2009
  When Geoffrey Canada began building a groundbreaking new organization in the mid-1990s to break the cycle of poverty in Harlem, he needed a way to hire “the army we needed and could afford.” AmeriCorps offered him that army. His “Peacemakers,” as he termed the AmeriCorps members, were young adults, many from the neighborhood or places just like it. Some had college degrees, but others were in transition. Many people at the time thought these young people were part of the problem, but Canada saw them as the solution to his challenge. And they were welcomed into the public schools by teachers who were wary of outsiders but struggling to keep order in their classrooms.

5/13/2009 Serve DC Celebrates 3rd Annual AmeriCorps Week in the District of Columbia
  AmeriCorps Week highlights the work of more than 1,800 AmeriCorps members in the District of Columbia and hopes to motivate more Americans to serve their communities. To commemorate AmeriCorps Week, Serve DC will host service projects at Turner at Green Elementary School, a volunteer recognition ceremony, training sessions, and conferences across Washington, DC.

  The third annual AmeriCorps Week is in full swing. Occurring May 9-16, 2009, AmeriCorps week is a recruitment and recognition event designed to motivate more Americans to serve their communities.

  During the week of May 9-16, the Red Cross will celebrate the third annual AmeriCorps Week in the United States. AmeriCorps is a program run by the Corporation for National and Community Service as part of the three main National Service Programs.
   
5/11/2009 Governor Rendell Encourages Citizen Service
  Governor Edward G. Rendell today proclaimed this week as National AmeriCorps Week in Pennsylvania and thanked the more than 28,000 young Pennsylvanians who have given more than 35.8 million hours of citizen service to the program since 1994.
