When Hurricane Katrina hit the Mississippi coast, community residents had to be rescued by boat as floodwaters filled their homes. The hurricane badly damaged homes in the low-income Turkey Creek Basin area, one of the first affordable communities for African-Americans in North Gulfport. YouthBuild AmeriCorps Gulfport program which engages youth who reside on the Mississippi Coast in learning construction skills to rebuild their neighbors’ homes along with CCEO YouthBuild from Gardena, California will work alongside of Habitat for Humanity and its partners. |

AmeriCorps Week is a recruitment and recognition event designed to bring more Americans into service, salute AmeriCorps members and alumni for their powerful impact, and thank the community partners who make AmeriCorps possible. |

Senator Mikulski Honors National AmeriCorps Week |

Senator Barbara A. Mikulski (D-Md.), a founder of AmeriCorps, today acknowledged the hard work members are doing around the country by joining her colleagues, led by Senators Christopher J. Dodd (D-Conn.) and Thad Cochran (R-Miss.) in introducing a resolution honoring the essential contributions AmeriCorps makes nationwide and encouraging people to consider joining the organization. A similar effort last year was blocked by Senator Tom Coburn (R-Okla.) with a parliamentary tactic. |

By Governor Jim Gibbons' decree, the week of May 11, 2008 is National AmeriCorps Week in Nevada. Each year commemorating National AmeriCorps Week, Nevada Volunteers honors the outstanding AmeriCorps members, Vista persons and Senior Corps participants that have served within the state of Nevada with a National Service Award. This annual celebration takes place this year at the Governor's Mansion in Carson City on Monday, May 12, 2008 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. |
