Love was honored as Volunteer of the Year by the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program of Allegheny County at a luncheon last week. RSVP, sponsored by the Red Cross, helps link prospective senior and retired volunteers with agencies that need them. The organization has honored volunteers with awards since 1987. Love was nominated by Amy Gold, JCC's volunteer coordinator.

Emma Rivadeneyra has been a mentor through the NAU Foster Grandparent Program of Maricopa County for six years. After retiring from her career as a preschool teacher, Emma continued her service to the community by working at the Peoria Senior Center. She was elated when she found a flyer about volunteering as a foster grandparent in the local schools. Since that time, Emma has worked at a number of schools and has served as a mentor for third graders, second graders, and kindergarteners.

Volunteers for the RSVP (Retired and Senior Volunteer Program) Medical Transportation group were honored today at a ceremony at the Westport Center for Senior Activities. The group collaborates with Westport/Weston United Way to provide volunteer medical transportation services for seniors of the two towns. The Volunteer UGA Community Retreat for participating organization leaders on Oct. 17 was one of the events. Volunteer UGA organized in light of United We Serve's mission to assist student organizations in achieving their goals.
"We had representatives from almost 30 service organizations and were able to collaborate on planning events and service opportunities, discuss potential solutions to issues all service organizations on campus are facing, share ideas, and inspire one another," Alongi said. "We also plan to do similar events that embody the vision of Volunteer UGA and the United We Serve Initiative."

The National Preparedness Response Corp (NPRC) is a national direct program sponsored by the American National Red Cross and funded by an AmeriCorps grant from the Corporation for National and Community Service. The mission of the NPRC is to provide vital emergency assistance to communities affected by disaster and increase preparedness in the areas of greatest need before disasters strike by recruiting, training and supporting young adults who will provide integrated community outreach and education through Red Cross service activities focusing on homeland security.

IBM has been a leader, with its Transition to Teaching, Bridgestar initiative and FedExperience Pilot Program to provide money and training to help older employees transition into new careers. Other employers should be much less averse to people 55 and older contributing their experience or retooling themselves and starting new careers. Community colleges also have been leaders for older Americans who want to redefine themselves in their careers. Federal initiatives such as the Senior Corps volunteer program could be significantly expanded.

We volunteered with an organization known as The Porch last Saturday. The cultural center acts as a resource and activity area for kids that live in the area, and its right here in the Marigny. Our own Team member DK organized the event, which entailed four NCCC teams that currently reside in New Orleans coming together to beautify a community garden here in addition to cleaning up trash in the neighborhood.

Jim Kauffman works through Wyoming Senior Citizens Inc. as coordinator for the state’s Senior Companion and Family Caregiver Respite programs. Senior Companions is a free program that provides non-medical help for such things as grocery shopping or trips to the doctor and social outings such as visits to the Senior Center. Respite care is available on a sliding fee scale for those who are providing care. A respite worker comes into the home once a week so that the care giver can leave. Again, there is no medical component to the service.
