Patrick A. Corvington was sworn in as the Chief Executive Officer of the Corporation for National and Community Service on February 18, 2010. Mr. Corvington assumed leadership of the Corporation during a time of extraordinary growth, mandated by the passage of the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act. Mr. Corvington’s leadership of the Corporation is guided by four principles: targeting resources to make service a solution to major national challenges; expanding opportunities for more people of all ages and backgrounds to serve; building the capacity of individuals, organizations and communities to use service as a lasting solution; and embracing innovation.

Mr. Corvington has devoted his life to serving others and empowering communities. He began his career as a case manager working with migrant farm workers. He also served as director of a group shelter home for adjudicated youth and worked as a patient advocate in a community-based HIV/AIDS clinic.

Mr. Corvington is a recognized expert on nonprofit sector leadership, philanthropy and volunteerism. Prior to joining the Corporation, he served at the Annie E. Casey Foundation as a Senior Associate focused on issues related to leadership development and capacity building. Previously, Mr. Corvington was Executive Director of Innovation Network, a non-profit agency devoted to building the evaluation capacity of the non-profit sector. Earlier in his career, he conducted policy research at The Urban Institute, and also worked to build the capacity of nonprofit organizations abroad.

Mr. Corvington, who is of Haitian descent, immigrated to the United States as a teenager and became an American citizen in 1993. He earned his B.A. in Sociology from the University of Maryland and his M.A. in Public Policy from Johns Hopkins University. He has co-authored publications such as “Ready to Lead: Next Generation Leaders Speak Out” and “Next Shift: Beyond the Nonprofit Leadership Crisis.”
