In 1965, the first group of 24 VISTAs (Volunteers in Service to America) began their service to lift people out of poverty. Fifty years later, more than 190,000 VISTAs have become part of that legacy. In honor of this milestone, we are launching an interactive timeline to unveil the remarkable journey of AmeriCorps VISTA.

It all started with a vision. VISTA was birthed from President John F. Kennedy’s idea of a domestic counterpart to Peace Corps. The president sought a national service program that would assist Americans suffering from poverty. The first VISTAs began serving in 1965 as part of President Lyndon B. Johnson’s War on Poverty. The volunteers lived at the poverty level, defining the characteristics of the VISTA program.

In its first year, more than 1,400 VISTAs, ranging in age from 18-81, served in 412 locations across 39 states and the District of Columbia. In 1967, the VISTA Summer Associates program was formed becoming the first national effort to recruit local volunteers. Today, more than 7,200 members serve annually in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and U.S. Territories at more than 3,100 project sites.

AmeriCorps: The Best of the American Spirit

“The young people who serve in AmeriCorps show us the best of the American spirit. They tutor our children, aid the victims of disaster, and restore our streams and parks. It is a tremendous investment in young people, a tremendous investment in the future, and I am a strong supporter of AmeriCorps.”

– General Colin L. Powell (Ret.)
