#Katrina10: 9.7 Million Hours Served – and Counting

AmeriCorps members, Senior Corps volunteers, and other national service participants have served more than 9.7 million hours around the Gulf Coast during the Hurricane Katrina response. They ran shelters and feeding centers, managed donation warehouses and call centers, removed debris, gutted and repaired homes, built new homes, provided case work and counseling, and coordinated volunteers.

And thousands of national service members and volunteers continue to serve around the region as the recovery continues.

Social Innovation Fund Awards $11.3 Million Grant to Expand Successful LISC Education and Career Services Initiative

The Corporation for National and Community Service Social Innovation Fund (SIF) has awarded an $11.3 million grant to Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC) to expand education and career services for low-income people.

Approximately 36 million U.S. adults between the ages of 16 and 65 have low literacy skills, and 62 million (30 percent) have low “numeracy” skills—they lack the basic education needed to be successful for many jobs. These numbers are even higher among unemployed workers: 23 percent of unemployed adults have low literacy skills, and 42 percent have low numeracy skills.

With the support of an earlier $21 million grant awarded over five years from the SIF beginning in 2010, LISC developed an approach to help stabilize low-income families by engaging them in job training and placement, benefits counseling, and intensive, ongoing financial coaching. LISC now has a network of more than 75 Financial Opportunity Centers across the country that helps low-income individuals find jobs and stabilize their finances.

A beautiful photo of first light at Glacier National Park in Montana. Of the image, photographer Kevin LeFevre says: “While shooting the sunrise at Bowman Lake, we were graced with this meandering doe. I scrambled to change my camera settings to accommodate the movement and pulled off this solitary photo. A once in a lifetime.” While parts of Glacier are closed because of ‪‎Reynolds Creek Fire‬, most of the park remains open, including Bowman Lake area. Photo courtesy of Kevin LeFevre.

AmeriCorps member helping others navigate challenges he faced

Nick Noble is currently serving his second 450 hour AmeriCorps term of service with the Utah Conservation Corps’ (UCC) inclusive crew. The inclusive crew was established in 2007 by AmeriCorps member Andy Zimmer and UCC assistant director Kate Stephens to engage persons of all abilities in environmental stewardship projects.

Last summer Noble, who has a significant visual impairment, served his first term on a UCC trail crew in High Uintas Wilderness navigating difficult terrain and taking on new and challenging conservation service work. This crew reduced fuels on 5.75 acres and completed heavy maintenance on almost a mile of popular trail.

While he is physically able to work on any UCC crew, this summer Noble applied specifically to the inclusive crew survey project so that he could help crew members with disabilities successfully navigate the new challenges of conservation crew work. He originally applied to be a crew member this summer with the intention of pursuing crew leadership next summer. Instead, UCC staff encouraged him to be a crew leader and he stepped up confidently into this role.
