#VISTA50 Puerto Rico

On October 6, 2015, the AmeriCorps VISTA 50th Anniversary Puerto Rico event took place at the Technology & Science Center in the Municipality of Caguas. Among the over 140 participants were AmeriCorps VISTA members, AmeriCorps members, Senior Corps, AmeriCorps Alums, supervisors, local government and foundations.

The general session consisted of a panel “Poverty in Puerto Rico: Realities and Perspectives.” The Panel included:

Dr. Luis Benitez, Director of the State Planning Board, Social Sector
Anitza Cox Esq., Senior Research Associate, Estudios Tecnicos, Inc. and NGO Professor
Dr. Norma Rodríguez, Former Dean Social Studies School, University of Puerto Rico and author of a book on poverty in PR
Olga Bernardy-PhD, Professor University of Puerto Rico and former Deputy State Director Department of Family-PR

Since 1965, AmeriCorps VISTA has engaged citizens to alleviate poverty in the United States. 2015 marks the 50th Anniversary of this ground-breaking national service program.

Happy 50th Anniversary, Foster Grandparents!

Since 1965, Foster Grandparent volunteers have made a difference in classrooms across the country as tutors, mentors and friends. The program allows volunteers age 55 and over to not only help kids but also to help themselves, by staying active and engaged in their communities. Watch this video that celebrates their joy, their impact, and the incredible relationships they develop with the kids they serve.

Welcoming 300 new AmeriCorps members to the National Service family in Rhode Island!

Today in Providence, RI we are proud to welcome over 300 AmeriCorps to the national service family. These members will serve with 9 AmeriCorps State, 21 AmeriCorps VISTA, and 4 AmeriCorps National programs across the state of Rhode Island to meet critical needs in the areas of education, health, veteran services, and economic opportunity. We look forward to the positive impact they will have on Rhode Island communities. Thank you to Serve Rhode Island and the CNCS State Office for hosting such an inspiring event!
