Character opts to ‘Serve A Year’ with national service. Would you?

AmeriCorps was in the spotlight as a character from ABC’s “The Middle” announced that he would be deferring college for a year to join the national service program.

While discussing the wait for a college acceptance letter, Sue’s friend Brad revealed that he would be taking a year to serve his country in AmeriCorps. Which leaves Sue excited but a little confused.

SUE: “I love you. I love America. What could go better together than the two things I love?! (pause) What is AmeriCorps?”

BRAD: “It’s kind of like the Peace Corps, but for America! I’m not sure what I’ll be doing for them yet — maybe teaching kids, maybe building houses. That could bring me and my dad closer. I’ll ask him how a hammer works!”
(Hopefully you can watch a clip of the scene below, though TV streaming gremlins may spoil our fun. For now.)

Like some of our members, Brad chose to defer his college admission (in his case, to NYU) to do his service. And when he finishes his service, Brad can use his Segal AmeriCorps Education Award to reduce his college costs, which would be significant at NYU. Just sayin’.

2015 Service Bowl Takes Boston by Storm

Seattle Mayor Ed Murray joined Boston Mayor Marty Walsh for a day of service in Boston with AmeriCorps members for the third-annual Service Bowl.

The event is traditionally hosted by the mayor of the Super Bowl winning city as the mayor of the defeated team’s city travels for a day of service projects with national service members and other volunteers.

Murray and Walsh worked with AmeriCorps Director Bill Basl on service projects at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church Youth Programs, and other volunteers to help create a basketball court and repaint a kitchen and art room.

The March 21 event was organized by the state commission on service and volunteerism.

Chelsea Clinton discusses new initiative to encourage national service on ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live’

Our friends at ServiceNation are leading a new “Serve A Year” campaign to inspire more young Americans to consider a year of national service, such as AmeriCorps. And that brought Chelsea Clinton to “Jimmy Kimmel Live” last night for an informative – and entertaining – chat with Kimmel about the effort.

We’ll let Chelsea explain:

“The real idea behind “Serve A Year” is that just like we all talk about where we went to high school or went to college, young people in America can talk about where they did their service.

“We have so many challenges.  We have a million kids who don’t graduate from high school. We have almost 50 million Americans who are food insecure. And we know that national service can help solve those challenges that we face and provide a real pathway to employment for young people.

“We have almost 6 million 16-24 year olds who aren’t in school or aren’t in a job. So thinking about solving those challenges together, giving more young people the opportunity to serve, to help empower the next generation is something that clearly all of us who were there today are committed to and we are thrilled to have the entertainment industry be a part of this effort.”
