Wounded Warrior Riders Saluted for Service

President Obama and Vice President Biden welcomed the Wounded Warrior Project’s Soldier Ride to the White House in celebration of the eighth-annual Soldier Ride.

Before meeting the President, all of the riders were presented with President’s Volunteer Service Awards in the White House Map Room by AmeriCorps Director Bill Basl.

The cycling event helps wounded veterans restore their physical and emotional well-being, and also raises awareness of our nation’s wounded warriors who battle the physical and psychological scars of war.

We’re looking back at an epic celebration on Storify

It was quite an event, so we collected some of the stories, posts, and tweets for a Storify slideshow about the 2015 Mayors and County Day of Recognition for National Service. With 2,786 public leaders participating this year, we couldn’t collect everything, but it was fun to see everyone standing tall for service and volunteering.

Volunteer and Support the New Americans Project

The New Americans Project will help promote volunteer opportunities for those interested in helping newcomers adjust to life in the United States and opportunities for newcomers to get involved in their communities through volunteer service.

As part of this initiative, the Corporation for National and Community Service will coordinate with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, the Department of Health and Human Services, and other federal agencies that interact with new Americans to ensure that they have information on how to find local service opportunities.

AIDS United (formerly the National AIDS Fund) supports community-driven programs that serve people living with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), the virus that causes acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS).

In 2010, the Social Innovation Fund (SIF) selected AIDS United as one of its first grantees. Together with its 12 subgrantees, comprising the Access to Care (A2C) initiative, AIDS United is increasing the engagement of low-income and marginalized individuals who know they are HIV-positive but lack access to medical care and other supportive services.

Almost four years into its partnership with the SIF, the A2C initiative has employed a variety of interventions to improve the health and economic stability of individuals living with HIV/AIDS. Examples include:

  • Supporting programming that utilizes telemedicine equipment in satellite clinics allowing HIV-positive individuals living in rural areas of Alabama to access HIV-specific medical care without the burden of driving to an HIV-specific medical clinic;
  • Establishing a strong and supportive partnership between Birmingham AIDS Outreach and the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s 1917 Clinic to re-engage people living with HIV/AIDS who have fallen out of HIV primary care in Birmingham, Alabama; and
  • Improving access to medical care and supportive services for formerly incarcerated individuals living with HIV in Louisiana.

AIDS United’s Senior Vice President, Vignetta Charles, credits the SIF with advancing the work of Access to Care in two important ways. First, the SIF raised the visibility of emerging and effective local programming, which attracted donors and partners who don’t typically fund HIV/AIDS programs. This was essential for meeting the SIF’s match requirement.
