National Service News Week In Review

College basketball has March Madness; national service has March Momentum.

Look at how we’re closing out this month:

  • A major announcement on late-night TV kicked off a campaign to promote national service
  • Millions of television viewers heard a sitcom character announce his intention to join AmeriCorps
  • In the month of celebrating public-private partnerships, we announced a new STEM AmeriCorps partnership with a major electronics company as part of the White House Science Fair
  • Senior Corps volunteers are helping Oklahoma communities respond to the aftermath of tornadoes
  • And a 98-year old Senior Corps member showed us us why experience and service go hand-in-hand

Scroll down for the details—but, remember, the end of March means we’re just days away from the Mayors Day of Recognition for National Service on April 7. Speaking of which, see below for what the mayors of the Super Bowl cities did this week.

A major announcement on...

Character opts to ‘Serve A Year’ with national service. Would you?

AmeriCorps was in the spotlight as a character from ABC’s “The Middle” announced that he would be deferring college for a year to join the national service program.

While discussing the wait for a college acceptance letter, Sue’s friend Brad revealed that he would be taking a year to serve his country in AmeriCorps. Which leaves Sue excited but a little confused.

SUE: “I love you. I love America. What could go better together than the two things I love?! (pause) What is AmeriCorps?”

BRAD: “It’s kind of like the Peace Corps, but for America! I’m not sure what I’ll be doing for them yet — maybe teaching kids, maybe building houses. That could bring me and my dad closer. I’ll ask him how a hammer works!”
(Hopefully you can watch a clip of the scene below, though TV streaming gremlins may spoil our fun.)

Like some of our members, Brad chose to defer his college admission (in his case, to NYU) to do his service. And when he finishes his service, Brad can use his Segal AmeriCorps Education Award to reduce his college costs, which would be significant at NYU. Just sayin’.

2015 Service Bowl Takes Boston by Storm

Seattle Mayor Ed Murray joined Boston Mayor Marty Walsh for a day of service in Boston with AmeriCorps members for the third-annual Service Bowl.

The event is traditionally hosted by the mayor of the Super Bowl winning city as the mayor of the defeated team’s city travels for a day of service projects with national service members and other volunteers.

Murray and Walsh worked with AmeriCorps Director Bill Basl on service projects at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church Youth Programs, and other volunteers to help create a basketball court and repaint a kitchen and art room.

The March 21 event was organized by the state commission on service and volunteerism.
