CNCS CEO in Indianapolis to announce city’s selection for White House initiative

Today, I was pleased to represent the Obama Administration with Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard as we announced his beautiful city is one of the new Promise Zones.

Since President Obama announced the Promise Zones initiative to improve the prospects of hard-working Americans to benefit from the economic recovery in struggling communities, the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) has been an enthusiastic and supportive partner. That’s one of many reasons I’m pleased to help introduce the benefits of this federal collaboration to eight new cities joining the effort today.

The results from the first group of five Promise Zones encouraged leaders from both political parties to apply for the Promise Zone designation which focuses federal resources – led by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and the U.S. Department of Agriculture – and private investments on specific problems to revitalize communities struggling with high poverty and unemployment rates.

As you are undoubtedly aware, the impact of the earthquake in Nepal has been astonishing. Tens of thousands of people are reportedly seeking shelter, and aftershocks are hindering rescue efforts in a powerful event that has already claimed more than 3,000 lives.

The national service family is saddened by the tragic loss of life and devastation resulting from the earthquake, and we are grateful to the international organizations engaged in the relief effort.

As you know, national service resources are devoted to activities in the United States and cannot be deployed overseas. However, we know that many of you are interested in supporting relief efforts at a time when our neighbors on the other side of the globe are in need.

The most-effective way people can assist in relief efforts is by making cash contributions to humanitarian organizations that are conducting relief operations to ensure a well-coordinated and well-resourced humanitarian response. Proven systems like the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Center for International Disaster Information (CIDI) are good places to begin researching the best ways to help.

How We #ServetheEarth on Earth Day

AmeriCorps’ Northern Office of Arizona Conservation Corps (AZCC) organized the Flagstaff Earth Day celebration. During the event, community members joined AZCC AmeriCorps members to clean up the Arizona city’s downtown area.

Local volunteers and corps members divided into nine teams to collect trash and litter from public areas including sidewalks, streets, local parks, and the Rio de Flag waterway. After completing the service project, everyone was welcomed to Heritage Square, where vendors, live music, and educational booths were set up for an Earth Day celebration.

What led you to serve in AmeriCorps?
When I graduated college I didn’t really know what I was going to do career-wise, but I knew I wanted to travel. One of my professors told me about AmeriCorps and I thought it would be a great opportunity for me to travel and figure out what I was interested in while also getting to give back to the community.
