National Service News Week In Review

What an especially great Friday! President Obama gave shout outs to AmeriCorps during today’s town hall meeting at Benedict College in Columbia, South Carolina.

He reminded the audience, which included many young people, that “AmeriCorps programs are an outstanding way to help fund your college education.”

In fact, 86 AmeriCorps alums have attended Benedict College and have spent $262,982 in Segal AmeriCorps Education Awards.

The national service family was well represented in the audience.

Members of YouthBuild and the City Year AmeriCorps program were there—and one City Year AmeriCorps member asked the President how our programs could continue to support the goals of the My Brother’s Keeper initiative.

That was a great question, especially since the White House just released the one-year progress report on My Brother’s Keeper, which includes references to AmeriCorps programs.

The President’s references to AmeriCorps put the cap on an inspirational week across the board. Scroll down to read about Senior Corps, the Social Innovation Fund, and more! And be sure to visit the updated NationalService.gov website. We’ve made it easier to find examples of our impact, especially if you’re visiting on your phone.

CNCS programs support important Presidential initiative

As the President Obama and the White House looks back upon the first year of the My Brother’s Keeper initiative, the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) is proud to play a role in supporting this important work.

President Obama launched the My Brother’s Keeper initiative in February 2014 and issued a powerful call to action to close opportunity gaps still faced by too many young people, and often by boys and young men of color in particular. My Brother’s Keeper is also asksr Americans to make a difference for young people by becoming a mentor, which research shows can significantly improve a young person’s potential for success.

As part of the federal response to support My Brother’s Keeper, CNCS is working to engage underserved youth in service through Youth Opportunity AmeriCorps, School Turnaround AmeriCorps, and 21st Century Conservation Service Corps that has the potential to transform their lives and the communities they serve.

Public-private connections create avenues to serve, open doors to employment

This March, we at the Corporation for National and Community Service are honoring the public-private partnerships that help make national service programs possible.

Employers of National Service is a great example of how these partnerships create real benefits for all involved. This new initiative focuses on the skills and energy AmeriCorps and Peace Corps alumni bring to the workplace.

Just six months after President Obama launched Employers of National Service, 175 employers of all sizes and from federal, state, and local governments; nonprofits; colleges and universities; and businesses have signed up for the initiative. These employers have formally acknowledged that national service hones the skills and leadership abilities of those who serve. They want national service alumni to join their teams.

Not only are AmeriCorps members and Peace Corps volunteers making significant contributions in the communities where they serve, but now that service is also recognized as an important experience that adds value to any career.
