CNCS honors the 25th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act

Rooted in the ingenuity of everyday Americans, the spirit of service reminds us that we are all united by a common purpose. For generations, the national service family has rallied around this ideal to advance the cause of equal access for Americans with disabilities. And this month, as we honor the 25th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), we continue to celebrate the unique contributions that our friends and neighbors with disabilities have made to the national service community.

We should also be reminded of the many ways that service can be a bridge for any American who wants to hone a skill set, broaden personal and professional networks, and gain exposure to new career prospects. Whether it is discovering a passion for teaching children how to read or launching a mentoring program, Americans of all backgrounds and walks of life have chartered new territory and discovered new employment paths while serving in AmeriCorps and Senior Corps programs.

Americans with disabilities have been an important part of the national service story. Along the way, they have helped others broaden their understanding of what having a disability means.

Deon, an AmeriCorps alum, represents the kind of spirit and devotion that AmeriCorps members and Senior Corps volunteers show every day.

This weekend I had the opportunity to participate in a service project with Northwest Florida State College and Farm Share, hosted by Volunteer Florida’s LeaderCorps member Darsey Kelly and Volunteer Florida grantee NWF Environmental Stewards at Northwest Florida State College.

LeaderCorps is a new Volunteer Florida program designed to immerse Florida’s AmeriCorps members in leadership development to maximize the impact of national service and advocate for volunteerism and civic engagement in their local communities. The inaugural class of LeaderCorps members is comprised of 21 members, who, in addition to their training, are also tasked with coordinating service projects in their communities.

This LeaderCorps project was held in Defuniak Springs at the Northwest Florida State College Chautauqua Center. In little over an hour, volunteers distributed over 14,000 pounds of food!

Local non-profit leaders noted that, in this rural community, many families struggle to find jobs, lack access to social services, and sometimes experience hunger. Local volunteers were excited about the opportunity to make a positive change, and they expressed hope that projects like this will become a regular event!

I am proud of our LeaderCorps team, local AmeriCorps members, and the many volunteers who served alongside them…they definitely got things done!!

Fridays make us feel like dancing. Service makes us feel like dancing. That means it’s time for a National Service Dance Party. Here are six reasons why national service makes us feel like dancing.

The Spirit of Service is Contagious

Even at the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) headquarters, we can feel the spirit of our AmeriCorps members and Senior Corps volunteers who are doing great things all across America. Sometimes the enthusiasm gets our toes tapping.
