Retired educator finds new way to share knowledge with community

After retiring as a fourth-grade teacher, Jerry Mulvaney looked for some way to continue to make a difference. That’s when he found Senior Corps RSVP.

“I taught fourth grade for 24 years. Wonderful things happened. Teachers touch the future. We develop future leaders,” said Mulvaney. “But after I retired, I knew I needed to find something to keep me active. I thought about volunteering and found out about RSVP.”

Jerry joined RSVP and serves as a volunteer helping to teach a Chronic Disease Management class. The Chronic Disease program at Burlington College in New Jersey helps build the capacity of individuals, families, communities, and health care systems to effectively prevent and manage chronic disease. Jerry works with seven other RSVP volunteers to teach classes to the community.

“The program is based on action plans. As we get older we lose our strength, through this program we work with our clients to create action plans to keep them strong,” said Mulvaney. “It can be a simple thing, like promising to walk around the block for 30 minutes each day.”

Jerry says the program brings folks together. “We all become good friends. Everyone gets a lot out of it. We start to encourage each other.”

And Jerry gets a lot out of the program as well.

“When you get involved in volunteering you never who never know you are going to meet,” said Mulvaney. “Serving as an RSVP volunteer, helping people stay strong, it gives me a purpose and a reason for getting up in the morning.”
